Latin Project 3 - 6th grade, 3rd Nine Weeks - Advertisement/Attention to Detail

Advertisement/Attention to Detail – Project 3

Latin is a language in which attention to detail is critical.  It is the ending of the words that determines its use in a sentence.  Thus, we shall see how attention to detail in the world around us impacts the information that is provided to us.

Using a newspaper, magazine, or other printed source, the student is to locate an item that upon initial reading states one thing, but further reading or observation shows that it is not as good as it seems to be.  Some examples will be shown in class.  Possible choices are:

Ø  An advertisement that says “buy a car for $149 a month.”  However, the fine print says $149 a month for the first six months, then $275 a month for the remaining sixty-five months; or the fine print says $149 a month at 12% interest for 84 months.

Ø  A population graph charting growth of population over time with the date axis listing the dates as: 1970, 1980, 2010, in that exact order, thus skewing the information.

Ø  There may even be an article or a headline with a punctuation error that results in a different meaning than intended.

It will take time to closely observe and find an example.  You will need to bring in your example and present it to the class.  Explain what the initial reading states then tell how it differs when further observation is applied to it.  This will be a simple one minute presentation to the class.

If you have questions concerning if your example is proper for the assignment, please see me prior to the due date.
